Are We Fully Relying on God?

Are We Fully Relying on God?

As we were reading Little House on The Prairie, I was struck by how much the pioneers had to toil and pray for what they had.

Think about our lives  today as Americans.

We can run to McDonalds for food instead of worrying if Pa will kill some rabbits and if we will be able to eat tonight.

If we want a house we can just buy a house that is already built. We do not have to live for months in a wagon as we search for land. Then when we find the land, we do not have to cut down trees to build our own homes.

Our children can have pretty much all the toys they want and not just have a hog bladder and corn cob with which to play.

That sounds good.  We are living in the best time the world has ever known. But is it really?

In the pioneer days people had to fully rely on God for everything they had. They made sure to study their Bible, pray, and go to church.

With all our stuff and conveniences we should have more time to devote to God, not less. Are we relying on ourselves and not on God? Are we using the extra time we have for God?

Think about these things as we enter the new year.

  1. I definitely plan on devoting more time to God and growing spiritually this year. It's so easy to get caught up in other things and forget that He is the reason we have all of these conveniences that help to make our lives easier in the first place. Happy New Year!

  2. Sharla Williams Orren ,
Little house on the prairie represents the olden days where mother, father and grandparents was present in our children life, unfortunately, not many families are privilege to this family structure. The destruction of the family unit is more prevalent in the black community, so that is why God and relying on him is the only choice. Great article.

  3. I always rely on GOD! He is my rock in life! I keep a journal and instead of writing "Dear Diary" I write "Dear GOD"...

  4. This is something we need to go back to, and ask our children how they would cope if they had to pray for everything instead of paying for it so easily. As I get older it makes me feel awful to look at the things we accumulate without even thinking about it. We are blessed and feel grateful for all this abundance because we knew what it was like to do without, and that is what makes the difference. It makes us have the right perspective of material benefits.

    1. That is such a good idea. I am going to start talking with my children more about that. We try so hard not to have so much stuff but I think as Americans we are very spoiled.

  5. Everything is so accessible in our culture now that we forget to rely on God. You have to make a purposeful commitment to Him in order to get it done in this time. Great article!
